Background

Our 864 range features exceptional wines from specific and single blocks, produced in small quantities and released in only the best years. An Oakridge 864 wine is terroir-driven. Made to demonstrate the importance of time and place with every bottle, and always a tribute to tradition, these wines are ready to drink now or cellar.

Tasting Notes

Deep burgundy in colour with a garnet hue. Intensely fruited aromas of pomegranate, cranberry and dark cherry leap from the glass, the fruit almost verges into blue fruits before notes of exotic spice and touches of earth reveal themselves. There is a background element of oak that is intricately woven into the fruit, never dominating. The palate is finally detailed, a generous core of powerful fruit is complemented by a velvet line of tannin. There is vibrancy here from carefully managed acidity which provides seamless length. A subtle textural element from time on lees that adds yet another dimension. Classic Yarra Valley Pinot Noir, from an excellent vintage sourced from a great site.

Vineyard Notes

Henk Vineyard, Aqueduct block. North facing at 225m above sea level. Planted in the red volcanic soils of Woori Yallock in 2008 using the MV6 clone and cropped at 5.7 t/Ha.

Winemaker's Notes

All grapes hand harvested and sorted prior to destemming 80% of the berries into an open fermenter with the balance being whole bunch inclusion. Fermentation proceeded naturally and lasted 21 days prior to pressing to a mixture of French oak barrels, of which 10% were new. Malolactic conversion was completed in barrel where the wine remained on its gross lees for 10 months followed by a further 9 months on lees in tank prior to bottling.

Vintage Notes

A long, cool growing season with average cropping levels and ample rainfall has resulted in wines with outstanding varietal definition and purity. Flowering occurred in late October, fruit set in December and harvested on March 19th at 13.0 baume.

Halliday Wine Companion - 98pts

“This is the finest Oakridge pinot I can remember tasting, and while it’s taken time, David Bicknell’s pinots aren’t far behind his world class chardonnays. Wonderful fruit purity and complexity here with its scents of white strawberries, crushed rose petals and patchouli. The effortless medium-bodied palate has a real sense of elegance with persistent, silky tannins in perfect harmony with the fruit. While it’s a total joy now, I’d love to see this in seven to 10 years. A superb wine.” – Philip Rich

The Real Review - 98pts

“Good depth of colour with a bright tint of purple in the meniscus; the bouquet is charming and complex, multi-layered and arresting, leading with fivespice and smoky bacon, a background of sotto voce fruits and flowers. The flavour is likewise multi-faceted and absorbing in its detail. Medium-full bodied and very satisfying, the balance and precision of the palate structure are notable, as is the purity of its line. An outstanding pinot, refined and long, with a super-seductive texture. It’s a fraction more powerful and more detailed than the regular Henk. (Aqueduct Block, Henk Vineyard, Woori Yallock at 225m altitude. 20% whole bunches. MV6 clone)” – Huon Hooke
