Aromas of fresh picked citrus, green apple skin and white stone fruit flesh. Flicks of gun flint reduction, green spice notes and hint of toast add complexity and interest. The palate is bright and generous with a remarkable depth of flavour. White stonefruits of nectarine and white peach are mixed with grapefruit and Paloma citrus. There is texture here too from time on lees and in bottle, and wonderful drive and length.
A traditional winemaking approach was used to produce this wine – handpicking and whole bunch pressing directly to 500 litre French oak puncheons for a natural fermentation followed by 10 months maturation on lees.
This wine was sourced from the north facing Willowlake Vineyard, sited in the red volcanic soils of Gladysdale. A cool, long vintage with abundant rainfall and very low cropping levels has resulted in wines of great purity and high natural acidity.
From the 1979 plantings of P58 chardonnay from the Willowlake vineyard in Gladysdale. Like all the Oakridge 2020s, this was hand picked and whole-bunch pressed to French oak puncheons for fermentation and maturation. A very bright green gold. Excites from the first, with its aromas of white cut pears, stone fruits and an intriguing, perfectly handled flinty, freshly torched brûlée-top reduction. This has terrific drive and persistence on the palate, and the textured and layered mouth feel is balanced by the wine's perfectly integrated acidity.
