One of Australia’s top sommeliers, Alexis Rojat, wrote last year about the influence of Oakridge Wines Chief Winemaker, David Bicknell, on the rise of cool climate Chardonnay in Australia. Rojat’s article refers to Bicknell and his team at Oakridge Wines as “the pioneers of the new fresher, lighter style of Chardonnay that’s now being produced in the Yarra Valley.”
Being one of the first in Australia to introduce the puncheon (500 litre cask) for his Chardonnay production, David has undoubtedly lead the way in the field of cool climate Australian wines. Many wineries across Australia are taking a leaf out of Bicknell’s book and are now using puncheons for their Chardonnay in regions as diverse as Margaret River, Adelaide Hills and Tasmania.
