2009 864 Syrah

Tasting Notes

Origin: Oakridge Vineyard, Coldstream, Yarra Valley

Grapes:
100% Syrah

Winemaking:
The vineyard is located at the foot of the Warramate Hills at Coldstream, and comprises 0.78Ha, facing due north. Soils are grey-loam alluvial with both high clay and ironstone content. The vines were planted in 1996 at 2,500 plants per hectare, and it is cane pruned to achieve a crop load of 5t/Ha. After hand picking on the 26th March, the grapes were chilled overnight in refrigerated containers then gently destemmed to open fermenter to preserve 100% whole berries intact. Vinification began with a 4 day cold maceration, followed by a 14 day alcoholic fermentation with temperatures between 24 – 34°C. No cap formed during the fermentation, so the ferment was neither plunged nor pumped over. Post fermentation, the wine remained on skins for an additional 5 days before pressing to barrel for malolactic fermentation. The wine remained on its malo-lees for 12 months without racking prior to blending and bottling.

Ageing:
12 months in 500 litres French oak puncheons of which 25% was new. Blended in May 2010 and bottled with a single filtration in November 2010.

Description:
Almost luminous purple red that is both vibrant and opaque. The aromas are lifted and bright - cassis, white pepper, jubes, raspberries and brown spices. A fresh, bright and intensely perfumed wine. The palate has a core of sweet Shiraz fruit showing red and black berries, spice and toast and a seamless line of floral intensity. Tannins are velvety and smooth providing a silky and textured finish.
